Mr. Houston Verl Mitchell, 75, of Magazine, Arkansas, formerly of Stigler died Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Fort Smith. He was born November 5, 1936 at Kiowa to Claude E.Mitchell and Ione (Bean) Mitchell. His stepfather was George West. He married Virgie Lois Smith on November 12, 1957 at Stigler. They lived in the Rocky Ridge area near Stigler until February 2011. They moved to Magazine, Arkansas to be near their children. He was a butcher and truck driver, deer and squirrel hunter. He always made beautiful gardens. He is survived by two sons, Glendon Mitchell and wife Reta of Mulberry, AR, Billy Mitchell and wife Louise of Hartshorne, OK; one daughter, Vickie Pilgreen and husband Robert of Magazine, AR; 13 grandchildren, Shawn Mitchell and wife Tina, Dell Mitchell, Tommy Mitchell and wife Janice, Kimberly Pease and husband Chris, Charlene Crawford and husband Ronnie, Misty Mitchell, Scottie Mitchell and wife Michelle, Shane Haney and wife J.J., Robbin Sloan and husband Phillip, Alissa Brigance and husband Jimmy, Kyle Mitchell, Caleb Mitchell, and Rick Kinsworthy; 20 great grandchildren, Matt, Kristin, Sadie, Billy, Cody, Landon, Grayson, Alexander, Ryatt, Tosha, Payton, Kearsten, Brenton, William, Journey, Justin, Jackie, Jordan, Michael, and Rhiannon; one great great grandchild, Shania; one sister, Melba Reed of California; one brother, Bill West of Alabama; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Lois Mitchell; his parents, Claude E. and Ione Mitchell; his stepfather, George West, a son, Danny Mitchell; a grandson, Christopher Mitchell; two sisters, Ann Estes and Ova Lee Campbell; two brothers, Vaughn and Gerald Mitchell. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the Whitefield Baptist Church with Reverend Tommie Parker officiating. Pallbearers will be Payton Crawford, Matthew Mitchell, Scottie Mitchell, Brenton Haney, Kyle Mitchell, and Caleb Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers include Tommy Mitchell, Shawn Mitchell, Shane Haney, Jimmy Brigance, Ronnie Crawford, Phillip Sloan, Christopher Pease, and Bob Pilgreen. Burial will follow at Sans Bois Cemetery under the direction of King & Shearwood Funeral Home of Stigler.
